In a fortuitous stroke of luck, I was able to visit with a second artist this week — Alexandra Dillon!
Dillon is a painter and long time resident of the west side — she is currently preparing dozens of paintings for a solo exhibition at Launch Gallery (April 6th)
Dillon draws inspiration from classical oil painters (a large monograph of Goya’s seminal works laid on a couch in her studio) as well as some of the surrealists — mostly in the way symbolism is employed. Dillon’s renderings of shaman in subtle moments of mind expansion/understanding/connection with the viewer yield powerful results irregardless of (some) of the work’s intimate size. Though some of the figures meet your gaze, I get the feeling you are seeing something important and private when you look at Alexandra’s paintings.
Dillon’s finely rendered, well worked surfaces and carefully tuned palette are something you need to see in person!
